Basic Step
SalsaBeginnerFoundationsBoth
The heartbeat of every figure. The forward-and-back rock-step that every linear salsa move is built on top of.

What This Move Is
The fundamental six-step pattern danced over eight counts: step, replace, close — twice. It does not travel; it keeps the couple connected and on time while the lead decides what comes next. Master this and the body mechanics behind every other figure are already half-learned.
Key Points
- Lead: Initiate the break from your torso and chest, not your feet — the follow reads your body, not your steps.
- Follow: Mirror exactly; when the lead breaks forward you break back, keeping light frame tension.
- Timing: On1 break on 1 & 5 (step forward L on 1, replace 2, close 3; back R on 5, replace 6, close 7). On2 the same footwork breaks on 2 & 6, with the lead breaking back first on 2 to invite the follow forward. Counts 4 & 8 are silent.
- Common mistake: Bobbing up and down or over-striding so weight doesn't fully transfer; leading with the feet instead of the body.
Style Notes
Keep it small and grounded. The basic is your reset and your thinking-space — when in doubt, return to it. On2 feels more laid-back and weighted; On1 feels sharper and more staccato.
