What This Move Is

The open break is the lead stepping back to create light-tension distance — a quiet connector. The push break preps on 8 with a back-of-hand push so both partners fall back on 1 and spring/rebound on 2; the tension-spring is its defining feature. Either way it sets up turns and catches from open position.

Key Points

  • Lead: Create firm, even tension through the hands and draw the follow back — don't yank or over-push.
  • Follow: Mirror back with the push, maintain the tension, and return — never go limp (you need the spring).
  • Timing: On1 push/break on 1 & 5 (push prep on 8). On2 on 2 & 6.
  • Common mistake: Going limp (no tension to spring off) or over-pushing/yanking the follow.

Style Notes

A sharp, punchy connector that bridges Foundations to Turns. The rebound is what powers a clean copa, inside turn, or wrap — the accent is the whole point.
