What This Move Is

Borrowed from cumbia — a separate dance — the cumbia basic is essentially a back basic with a slight rotation added each cycle, so the couple slowly orbits a shared center instead of staying square. That little rotation is the gateway feeling for every figure where you turn around each other.

Key Points

  • Lead: Back-break as usual, but let each replace step carry a small pivot so you and she rotate a few degrees per measure. Lead the rotation from your frame, evenly — don't crank it.
  • Follow: Match the back-break and let the rotation travel you with him; keep your steps small so you stay connected as the axis moves.
  • Timing: Standard 6-step over 8 counts; the rotation rides on the breaks (1 and 5 on On1; 2 and 6 on On2).
  • Common mistake: Over-rotating so the couple spins instead of orbiting, or losing the back-break rhythm while chasing the turn. Small and smooth.

Style Notes

The partnered cumbia basic is distinct from the solo Cumbia Step shine (SL055) — this one keeps the hold and gently rotates the couple; that one is footwork danced apart. Many beginners meet this right after the back basic as their first rotating figure.
